Weather Week: Day 3

Weather Week: Day 3

Day three of weather week was quite interesting! There was thunder and lightning while we were sleeping, and we could hear the clicking of sleet hitting our windows. When we woke up, everything outside was covered in ice with a layer of light snow on top.

I took a couple pictures from my living room window:

For our weather activity, we made water beads - they were our little raindrops.
A closer look:
Filling jars with water.

A great sensory experience!
We tried sucking individual water beads up with these turkey basters and transferring them to jars lol.
Great for fine motor and hand-eye coordination.
I-Bell was really good at it!
S hated it :)
Pouring and dumping is way more fun, and also good for fine motor!

Then we talked about how it rained the night before and how the rain froze and made the ice outside. I asked if they wanted to freeze their raindrops and they were so excited.
We put our "raindrops" in the freezer.
I-Bell asked right away this morning if we could get our raindrops out of the freezer and look at them.
She examined them.
Some were broken.
I gave her one frozen bead, and one regular water bead.
I asked what was different, and she said, "One is cold, and one is warm." We also talked about how one was hard and one was squishy, one was clear and one was white.
She held her thumb over the frozen bead and it melted. They smash when you squish them, so after it melted it was flat in her hand.
Time to play!
We got all of the water beads back out. D and I-Bell played for a long time. Eventually, there were water beads all over the kitchen floor. These things bounce and bounce when they fall to the floor. When you try to sweep them up, they go everywhere. So we got our shoes on and stomped them, and then swept, and swept and swept the floor. I'm still finding water beads around. The best thing is, eventually they loose their water and go back to little, teeny tiny balls that will be swept/vacuumed up.

In the summer, these are fun outside. They'll be all over the driveway/yard, and eventually loose their water and disappear - until it rains! They reappear as full-size water beads all over outside after a rain fall:)
